Chesterfield v Maidenhead 20 April 2024

Final game for the National League Champions saw the Spireites entertain Maidenhead. Paul Cook made 4 changes as King, Horton, Oldaker and Jacobs started. The celebratory atmosphere was building early doors in front of a sell out SMH Stadium.

A decent start and passages of play with a couple of crosses and half chances not quite coming to fruition. However two goals in three minutes from Mandeville and Quigley saw the Spireites take control and go in 2-0 up at half time.

Then us being us, at the start of the second half – Maidenhead did exactly the same to us with two goals in three minutes with strikes from Abrahams and Koko. Maidenhead had definitely not read the script and at times looked like spoiling the party. Dobra forced a world class save from Ross and then the same player hit the post after a flowing move.
Hobson came on for Quigley, Clements for King and Banks for Dobra, as Paul Cook sought the win that would finish the season in a bit of style. That bit of style eventually came on 89 minutes when Banks fired an unstoppable shot from what looked well over 25 yards; and finally the win came!

Scenes of celebration at the final whistle with the trophy presentation and a lap of honour by the players, their families and the management followed.

Only one yellow today: Asade for Maidenhead.

Corner count: Spireites 8 Maidenhead 5

The attendance was a record breaking 10108, including 168 Maidenhead fans.

Maidenhead fans arrived in fancy dress!

Full time: Spireites 3 Maidenhead 2

Record wins, record goals, record points over the season, but 65 conceded is a point of worry. The work starts now rebuilding and adding for August and the new season in the EFL.
